| Do I Need a Permit?
In most cases - no. For your normal budgies, finches, quails, weeros and doves you won't need a permit. For some parrots you will not need a permit if you only have two or three. We will advise you before you buy a bird whether or not you need a permit.

Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) Permits Not all birds can simply be bought from a pet shop, taken home and put in a cage indoors or an aviary out on your back lawn. Some birds require a license or permit from CALM and must be kept under certain housing arrangements, such as double-door aviaries. Which permits you may require also depends on why you are keeping the birds and how many you have. For example are they just as pets (hobby), or are you intending to become a breeder and sell them for profit? The two most common types of permit applications are shown below, the Avicultural and Declared Animals licenses. You can click on them to see a larger view, but the size is quite large for dial-up users (100Kb). Depending on your browser settings, you may have to click on the large view too, to get it to go full size. It is beyond the scope of this website to enable you to decide if and exactly which licenses you may require. There are more besides these two. Also the rules change constantly at the discretion of CALM. We put up this page as most people are unaware they may even need a license at all. We will tell you before you purchase a bird if you need a permit and if so, arrange for you to get one while you are in the store.

Did You Know?
The Rainbow Lorikeet, so common on the East coast of Australia, is a declared pest in WA? You not only need a license to keep these birds, but your aviary must have a double-door system. This is where you enter a cubicle inside the aviary and close the outside door before opening the inside door. This is to prevent the birds from escaping into the wild. |
